It is native to Central Asia, a wild variety is present in Europe, Japan and North America. It is supposed that it was introduced into European territory by the Celts during their migrations. Elecampane grows in the garden without difficulty, it is a lush shrub and can reach about one and a half metres. Golden yellow inflorescences in the shape of the Sun bloom on the sturdy stem and large leaves between June and October. The popular names still in use in the German language provide indications about its healing powers and ritual uses of the past: sun grass (Sonnenwurz), Odin’s head (Odinskopf).
Elecampane is one of the oldest medicinal plants in Europe, already known by the followers of Hippocrates with the name Helenion. The root had a very important role in medieval medicine; in fact, a vinous tincture considered a cure-all was obtained from it. By virtue of its expectorant, lung-strengthening and cough-relieving properties, Elecampane was used as a remedy against catarrhal bronchitis and tuberculosis. Some scientific studies show that, even diluted at a ratio of 1:10,000. slows the development of tuberculosis bacilli. The fresh root, or rhizome, has the same smell as a banana and was once an ingredient in various dishes, both raw and cooked.

Già in tempi molto antichi la radice ha trovato impiego nelle miscele per fumigazioni, in particolare quelle praticate in occasione delle feste di mezza estate. Era considerata simbolo dell’energia del Sole, che si riteneva venisse liberata grazie alla combustione.
Queste fumigazioni sono efficaci quando il tempo è cupo, aiutano in caso di melanconia e depressione o semplicemente quando ci si sente tristi. Il suo profumo allevia la tensione e lo stress.
In passato le popolazioni nomadi, cui erano note tali proprietà armonizzanti, erano solite servirsene per tranquillizzare i cavalli.
Si dice che le fumigazioni con Enula prevengano gli influssi patogeni e attivino l’energia interiore. L’Enula è molto apprezzata anche dalla cultura indiana, che contempla le fumigazioni con l’Inula racemosa, una varietà locale, ad azione armonizzante, purificante e curativa.
